It was almost 3 football fields long and weighed 45,000 tons empty, but no one could know the majestic destiny of this mighty Iowa Class battleship when she was launched on January 29, 1944, over 2 years after America entered WWII. The thunder of her powerful Mark 7 16” guns, able to throw 2,700 pound projectiles up to 23 miles, was heard in 1945 in the epic Pacific battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa, as well as on the enemy’s mainland. Latter that year in Tokyo Bay, on September 2, 1945, the official enemy surrender document was signed on her now famous deck and the war with Japan was officially ended. After further action in Korea in 1950-51 and in the Persian Gulf in 1991, the historical U.S.S. Missouri was decommissioned and is now a museum docked at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, keeping vigil over her little sister, the sunken Arizona.
